Success at the Midlands Open

Our team participated at the Midlands Open Taekwondo Championships held in Coventry on the 25th of March.

The event received players from throughout England, Wales, Ireland, and Denmark. Overall, there were a total of 352 competitors in different categories.

The event was hosted by Five Lions Taekwondo Academy. Doors opened at 08:00 am with the first first at 09:30 am. The event concluded at 18:30pm. Daedo electronic scoring systems were used for all competitors in the Children's categories and above. Each fight was 3 rounds of 1 minute 30 seconds, with a 30 second rest interval. Coach Brandon Avellano (2nd Dan) accompanied the team, with him also competing in the veteran’s category.

The team competed in the following categories:

Children Female B -36kg Chanel Hyde Gomes

Children Male B -32kg Brandon Edmonds Avellano

Cadets Male B -59kg Duncan Stewart

Veterans Male A +80kg Brandon Avellano

Brandon took home a silver medal in the Veterans +80kg, facing Yamikani Guba from Team Warrior TKD in the finals. Duncan bowed out in the QF to Joseph Ainsworth from Buzz TKD, after a very impressive win. Brandon Jr and Chanel were unlucky in the draw as they faced experienced and offensive fighters. The second competition, for all but one fighter.

This event has also allowed us to network and continue building on existing relationships with other clubs. We would also like to thank all the parents who attended the event to support the team.

As with all competitions, our sponsors have played an important part. We would like to thank Duncan’s player sponsor, Damex, for their generosity in supporting his development.

Lastly, a huge congratulations to Five Lions Taekwondo Academy for organizing the event.
