British National Champion

The British Taekwondo National Championships took place at the English Institute of Sports in Sheffield on Saturday 30th September and Sunday 1st October.

All advanced divisions and Para Taekwondo took place on Saturday with novice divisions on the Sunday. The event saw close to 900 competitors.

Deona became British National Champion in the Veterans Female +67kg category after some outstanding performances. An impressive achievement which has seen her invited to join the British National Squad 2024. This squad will meet every 4-6 weeks at the National Taekwondo Centre in Manchester.

Deona, who has recently relocated to the UK, to continue her training in surgery, has been attending some sessions in various clubs namely, Aquila Taekwondo and Jaguar Taekwondo Club, both of which we are thankful for. She has also returned to Gibraltar numerous times, prior to the event, to get some sessions in and visit her loved ones.

Deona had some words to share:

“My matches were physically harder than I anticipated, partly to do with nerves. It had taken me a little while to work things out, and I was given some very good advice from my coach Georgina during my matches. Thank goodness it all worked out and I won!”

We would personally like to give a special mention and thank you to coach Joss Kingsley from Passion Taekwondo Club, Master John Webster from Jaguar Taekwondo, Dr Kriti Vig, British Taekwondo’s Angela and Head Referee Clare, as well as Aquila Taekwondo for their support during the event.

Lastly, all this would have not been possible without Deona’s player sponsor Birdie Cafe Restaurant. A Chinese restaurant serving high quality tasty authentic meals, eat in or takeaway, located at Watergardens.

On another note Deona would like to personally thank her friend Chris, and her family and friends for making her feel so welcomed and included during her time in Gibraltar.
