6TH COMMONWEALTH TAEKWONDO CHAMPIONSHIPS

November 18, 2014

This past weekend Gibraltar, amongst 20 other countries, participated at the 6th Commonwealth Taekwondo Championships, held in Edinburgh.

The championships received top athletes including World and Olympic medalists, and we had the opportunity to meet Jade Jones who won Gold at the London 2012 Olympics.

Saturday was the day when all of our athletes from Team Gibraltar competed. Alexander Trinidad had an early exit in his fight in the under 80kgs category against Jake Moscrop from Team England. This was followed by Lorena Garcia, Dana Garcia and Alexandra Lara who competed in the A Class Individual Under 30, narrowly missing the semi-finals by qualifying 14th, 15th and 16th respectively. Megan Ruiz competed in A Class Individual Under 17 and achieved 5th place.

Sunday the synchronised team composed by Alex, Dana and Lorena achieved 5th place.

All team members, including Masters Edward and Ernest Garcia would like to express how proud they are of their performances. It has been an wonderful experience and an honour to compete against other countries at this level.

Although the Gibraltar Team is now enjoying a "short" well deserved break, they are looking forward to further their development to attend international championships in the very near future.

We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the event organiser Master David Bailey, helpers, volunteers, everyone else involved and Scotland for making this event possible.
